Liberal Democrats: Local relief as MP suspension points to by-election in Rutherglen and Hamilton West
Commenting on the suspension of Rutherglen & Hamilton West MP Margaret Ferrier for 30 days from Parliament, Councillor Robert Brown, Liberal Democrat Group Leader on South Lanarkshire Council said:
“This is long overdue. It is astonishing to think that this all goes back to events in October 2020. How the Parliamentary authorities took so long to decide this matter is a mystery. It has though taken even longer to deal with the Covid breaches by former PM Boris Johnston.
I think most local people will be relieved that this matter is now coming to a long overdue conclusion. Rutherglen and Hamilton West will now be able to recall our MP. We shouldn’t forget she was elected for the SNP and the by election, when it comes, will be an opportunity to reject the divisive politics represented by both the SNP and the Conservatives.
On a personal basis, I feel sorry for Margaret Ferrier. She made a very bad mistake of judgement and has paid the price for her recklessness.”
