Gloria Adebo to run in new Rutherglen seat at General Election

20 Apr 2024

Local Liberal Democrats have announced that Gloria Adebo will be their candidate for the new Rutherglen seat at the General Election.

Gloria was seen as a doughty and impressive campaigner when she contested the recent Rutherglen and Hamilton West By Election in November 2023. She also stood as a council candidate for Rutherglen Central and North the previous year when she narrowly missed election.

Gloria lives in Rutherglen with her family. Originally from Nigeria, she works as a data analyst with a major financial institution.

Gloria said:

“Our politics are broken – and people have lost trust in politicians and governments. The General Election will be a landmark event with the potential for a new start – based on trust, on Liberal values not vacuous slogans – change that will benefit everyone.

The General Election is a real chance for local people to deliver a judgement on the difficulties and disasters we have been landed in by incompetent, populist governments in London and Edinburgh.

I want to see our Government delivering for people in Rutherglen and across the United Kingdom – a fair deal for those damaged by the cost of living and energy crises, action to rebuild our vital NHS, provide appropriate funding for local services, deliver environmental sustainability and fix our broken relationship with Europe – damaged by the Conservatives’ disastrous Brexit. This is about our economy but it’s also about Britain’s place in the world.

Only Liberal Democrats have a clear plan to rebuild this relationship with our neighbours and trading partners, gaining a better deal for Britain, repairing the damage the Conservatives have done, renewing the ties of trust and friendship, and setting us on the path back to the Single Market. Britain belongs at the heart of Europe.

The Liberal Democrats are a growing and dynamic part of an alternative way forward– offering hope in place of despair, founded on a belief in individuals, in the rule of law, in equality of opportunity and the importance of human rights here and across the world.

For me, putting public service back into the beating heart of our politics is so important, and that is why I am flying the flag for the Liberal Democrats at the General Election.”

Cllr. Robert Brown, Liberal Democrat Leader on South Lanarkshire Council, said:

“Gloria Adebo is a star candidate – a breath of fresh air in politics. I think she will do extremely well for the Liberal Democrats in the new Rutherglen seat.

The collapse of the Conservatives and the long overdue decline of the SNP provide space and opportunity for the Liberal Democrats and Liberal values. More importantly it is time to give local people some hope and optimism that a better future is possible than the tired old slogans and the damaging divisions of recent years.

Gloria does what Liberal Democrats do best: standing up for local communities and offering positive solutions.”
